The purpose of the certification program of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board is to conduct certification activities in a manner that upholds standards for competent practice in the health care specialty of Chiropractic Neurology. The Board also conducts recertification designed to enhance the continued competence of the Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist.

Chiropractic Neurology is defined as the field of functional neurology that engages the internal and external environment of the individual in a structured and targeted approach to affect positive changes in the neuraxis and consequent physiology and behavior.

I just got off the phone with someone interested in our functional neurology care. This happens daily, and normally it’s nothing much to write about. But something in particular seems to be happening more and more frequently, so I felt compelled to write about it.

But first, a little background…

(most) Medical doctors use ONE method of treatment: throw a pill at it or inject it.

(most) Surgeons use ONE method of treatment: cut something out or fuse something together.

(many) Chiropractors use ONE method of treatment: pop it or crack it.

(many) Physical Therapists use ONE method of treatment: stretch it or exercise it.

Now, if you have suffered with an injury or illness and these therapies solved the problem for you, then I’m glad. In fact, it’s wonderful, because you were able to get back to a normal life in a fairly quick and efficient manner.

But if you are reading this, chances are you’ve tried all those options and you’re still suffering.

Which brings me to my original story:

I’m a fairly laid-back type of personality. It takes a lot to ruffle my feathers. But what does it every time is when I hear that someone is told by their doctor “You’ll just have to learn to live with it”, or “there’s nothing that can be done”, or  ”just try to get by the best you can”, or the most horrific statement of disrespect and de-humanization: “you’re faking it”.

So yes, there have been cases where these statements may apply. But I would venture to guess that it represents a vast minority of cases. Especially when it comes to headaches, fibromyalgia, vertigo, depression and many, many more.

And here’s what I’ve been hearing a lot of lately:

My doctors keep referring me around in a circle with no answers.

The big, fancy hospitals just gave me the same diagnosis as the local one.

The bigger, fancier hospital just gave me the same diagnosis as the less big, less fancy one.

And the biggest, fanciest hospital just said there’s nothing that can be done, go to your local fancy hospital.

Now, here’s what this really means in terms of the services that you get:

My doctors keep putting me on more and more medications (because that is their only treatment).

When my doctor ran out of meds to put me on, they referred me to someone who uses a different list of meds (because that is their only treatment).

I’ve tried therapists and ‘alternative’ therapies which helped, but didn’t fix it (because stretching and popping is as limited as only using meds).

When I went to the big, fancy hospital, they gave me more meds, and I got a surgical consult.

The surgeon told me that they have to cut it out or fuse it together (because that is their only treatment).

When I went for a second opinion at the biggest, fanciest hospital, the doctors told me that the new meds AND the surgery won’t fix it (at least they were forthcoming about that), just go home and live with it (because if meds or surgery won’t fix it, nothing can).

Can you see how crazy this cycle is?

One of the biggest mistakes I see with patients that are not getting good results from their current Fibromyalgia therapy is thinking that they’ve had all the right tests to figure out what is really causing the Fibromyalgia symptoms.

Many of my patients have seemingly had every test done under the sun. Most of the people I consult with who are suffering with Fibromyalgia have had MRI’s, CT scans, NCV’s, EKG’s, basic blood work, mental evaluations, and colonoscopies……. Now, all of these tests do have their place, don’t get me wrong. They can rule out some very dangerous conditions. But here is what I have found: after spending two days at the big diagnostic clinics, they come out with the same thing they had before, a report that says that the labs are “normal” and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

The truth is that zero functional testing has been done.

Fibromyalgia is ultimately a neurological condition.

Research shows that Fibromyalgia has a huge neurological component. It makes sense that if you have a neurological problem, then you need to get a functional neurological examination to get to the bottom of what is causing your fibromyalgia.

A functional neurological examination doesn’t just look for pathology of the brain and nervous system, but also for different subtle clues and findings to let the doctor know how the different parts of the brain are communicating with each other. If the different parts of the brain are not communicating with each other, then the brain and the body will not work correctly. When this happens, the result can be body pain, migraines, vertigo and fatigue.

Many things can contribute to the neurological problems of people with fibromyalgia. These potential factors are gastrointestinal permeability, hormone imbalances, immune dysfunction, intestinal dysbiosis and candida among other things. Success with fibromyalgia treatment then, depends on stepping back and looking at all the pieces of a patient’s health puzzle.

Don’t stop looking for the answers. You need to find a doctor that will do functional testing and look at the functional ranges of lab results and someone that will put all the pieces of your health puzzle together.

Due to the treatment methods applied by Functional Neurologists, the types of conditions that a one typically sees are conditions such as learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, post stroke rehabilitation, balance disorders, movement disorders, dystonias, peripheral neuropathy, chronic pain and headaches.

Traditionally, medical neurology tends to look at disease of the nervous system as black-and-white with either optimal neurologic function or neurological disease such as tumors, strokes etc. Functional Neurology looks at dysfunction of the nervous system as different shades of gray looking for subtle changes in the nervous system before they become distinct pathologies.You will often hear it said by functional neurologist that neurons need fuel and activation in order to thrive and survive. Fuel can be defined as oxygen, glucose and essential nutrients. Activation refers to stimulation of the nervous system which causes changes in the structure and metabolism of the nerve cell (neuron). More recently, Functional Neurology Practitioners are also involved with eliminating possible negative effects on neurons such as toxins, infectious agents and immune responses.

Functional Neurology is changing the face of chronic health care.

Four factors that are of high importance to the functional neurologist are:

1.  Determining where the failure in the nervous system lies.

2.  Determining would be the right stimulation to activate that area.

3.  What the health and condition of the failing area is, so as to determine how much stimulation would be too much.

4.  Adapting this vital information in order to apply that precise amount of stimulation to the patient in our office.

It is important to note that the stimulations used must be specific to the particular patient who is being treated. There is bio-individuality to the nervous system, just as individual as a fingerprint, and even those with similar symptoms may require different stimulations at different frequencies and intensities in order to achieve the best success. This cannot be done in a generalized or cookbook type program. For example, you cannot treat every patient with a balance disorder or ADHD with the same treatment protocols. Generalized treatments run the risk of exciting an area of the nervous system that is already overexcited, or stimulating an area that should be inhibited. Results are maximized due to the fact that the program of stimulation is tailored to the individual patient’s problem and capacity, and not a one-size-fits-all program where results may be limited or the program may actually be inappropriate.  In other words:  Different people, different brains, and therefore, different treatments.

It is important to note that the functional neurological examination although very detailed is noninvasive and therefore can be performed on many different types of patients without patient anxiety being a factor. This is very significant especially for those practitioners treating children on the autism spectrum, because there is a tendency for these children to have higher anxiety.   The skilled Functional Neurology practitioner realizes that everything from the patient’s posture, to tics, to faulty eye movements, and alignment are all expressions of what is going on in the patient’s nervous system.  Subtle though these expressions may be, to the highly skilled Functional Neurologist, these “little things” mean a lot!

Activation of the nervous system via specific exercises or stimulations to targeted areas of the brain, pathways or circuits can create powerful results in the individual, but should be carefully monitored so that the metabolic capacity of the patients nervous system is not exceeded, and damage does not occur.

Functional neurology is a field of study that achieves successful results by applying current neuroscience in an office setting. This means that the Functional Neurology practitioner is taking current neuroscience from the research laboratory and devising ways of applying that research in the office to treat patients. The training begins with neuron theory and progresses to a level that allows the practitioner to evaluate and treat dysfunction of the nervous system without the use of, or in conjunction with medications.
